A sermon on Matthew 3: 13-17 offered on January 11, 2026
Clearly, even John, John the Baptist, wearing camels hair and living in the desert just to be close to the Divine, does not always understand what God wants from us. When Jesus came to be baptized, John “would have prevented him.” Which is what makes sense – there’s a sermon coming up later this month on foolishness and how God’s word sometimes seems like foolishness to us – and this is one of those times. It seems like foolishness for John to baptize Jesus since John knows – or at least has a pretty good inkling of – who Jesus is.
And yet, Jesus insists. Jesus takes that God-With-Us title of Emmanuel seriously. To hear the full sermon, click here.
